Reverberations of Blue Film, Sculptures and Prints by Negin Moss/Sharifzadeh At Seyhoun Gallery Negin Moss's first solo show in LA, with film, sculptures, and hand-painted prints. January 12 – January 19, 2013 First Los Angeles solo exhibition of artist Negin Sharifzadeh. On view from January 12 through January 19, 2013, at Seyhoun Gallery, Los Angeles, Reverberations of Blue brings together Negin Sharfizadeh’s award-winning stop-motion animated film, Even Gray Feels Blue, and a series of sculptural works and hand-painted canvas prints drawn out of the filmmaking process. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 9 pm on Saturday, January 12, with a screening of the film at 7 pm, followed by an artist talk between Negin Sharifzadeh and composer Negar Bouban. The film was built in conversation with In turn, composed and performed by Bouban and based on the poem, The Last Turn, by Ahmad Shamlou. Even Gray Feels Blue was born out of the process of adapting Sharifzadeh’s sculptural practice into the language of stop-motion animation, while the objects created for the show return this conversation back to the sculptural realm. The series as a whole investigates the nature of melancholia and solitude, translating these intimate experiences of the individual body, memory and psyche to the broader socio-emotional realities in which they unfold. The objects and the film serve as memorials, moving across mediums to build a self-contained mythology from the pieces of Sharifzadeh’s own memories and loss. The fragmented narrative structure she creates opens up space for the audience to remember their own stories. Sharifzadeh has developed an organic suite of techniques, peeling away the traditional sculptural methods of building and casting, and working with everything from needlework learned from her grandmother to assemblages of found objects, wire mesh, wax and plaster. Her animations are painstakingly constructed through these same processes and materials, including a custom-built multi-planar animation stand incorporating multiple layers of glass. Through these methods, Sharifzadeh has found a resonance between the themes she is exploring and the works, allowing her stories to slip almost unconsciously into the materials through the obsessive actions of her hands creating. Born in Tehran in 1979, Sharifzadeh grew up during a time of revolution and war, creating an ongoing fascination with the dynamics of social systems, and how upheaval and violence within them are carried on in the bodies of individuals. She received her BFA in Sculpture from Tehran University in 2002, and a second BFA in Performing Arts from the School of the Art Institute Chicago (SAIC) in 2010. Sharifzadeh has lived in New York City since her graduation in 2010, where she has been fusing these practices into stop-motion animation. Her work has been shown in many group and solo exhibitions worldwide. Even Gray Feels Blue has been shown in numerous festivals and won top honors in New York at the Williamsburg International Film Festival (Willifest) and the Crown Heights Film Festival for Best Experimental Film and Best Animation. An open letter to Mr Ben Afllec. Dear Ben, I always liked you, as a person, writer, actor, and as a director. At least until I saw your latest work. Argo. In an essay type narration or comic strip at the beginning of your much publicized movie, you have summarized the history of Iran, the place I came from, in the most distorted, lop sided, wrong, and border to fraudulent way which only in fictional world of Hollywood you could get away with it. I am talking about the so-called art work of Kyle cooper that takes away any journalistic credibility from your work. As respectful that I am trying to be, it is a simplistic, linear account of what led to the Iran's revolution, and as close to the truth, as the Khomeini's words was about his love for freedom of Iranian people. It is indeed the same wrongful song that broadcast mercilessly in the ear of Iranians prior to their fall, to persuade them, and justify their historic mass suicidal move of 1978. You show a photoshop altered picture of an upside down hanged from ceiling tortured or dead person to show the brutality of Shah's regime which was replaced by Khomeini's multi dirty dozens. I am sure you didn't do that knowingly, but You know well that using that altered picture, showing it to your audience as a document, not only ethnically is wrong, it simply takes away all the journalistic credential that you have tried so hard to earn in making of Argo. In the same short part, the account of down fall of Mossadegh, the picture of poverty ridden iran in time of Mohamad Reza Shah is equally wrong, and at least remains unresolved amongst Iranians to this date. In a way the way they are presented in Argo, justifies a revolution which introduced the world to a phenomenon called, "state sponsored terrorism", a prelude to the September 11 disaster, which remains the biggest threat to the world security. Iran is now a depressed nation, and in deep sense of guilt, for being manipulated in 1978 to go against the same person that Argo accuses of committing all the crimes, and wrong doings. Today in Iran, the older ones remember the days of Mohammadreza shah, as the days of lost glory, with remorse, and young ones blame their parents for joining the frenzy movement of 1978 which handed the destiny of many generations to come in the cruel hand of Khomeini and company. Your apparent consultants were wrong . My suggestion is, if you can't figure out how a person or an era was, look at what happened when that person and era are gone. Argo's conclusion about two of the most controversial and hotly debated events among Iranians, has totally, and categorically ignored all the arguments and valid documents, and sided with the one's who have locked themselves in a mental cocoon of unearned intellectualism. They, dear Ben, are responsible for bringing the catastrophic revolution of Khomeini upon Iranians, and to the free world. Argo took the wrong side , and ignored the rest. The politics, and history of Iran is so complicated, and confusing, even for many of the Iranians, even the educated ones. A haphazard look and judgement does not serve the justice. Oh by the way, in that infamous comic strip at the beginning of Argo, a clip from the late Shah's last interview with David Frost in Panama a few month before his death, was used. Have you seen the rest of that interview? For instance, the part that he points at two American oil companies who financed this costly operation we know as Iran's devolution? Or the part he points at General Huyser's notorious mission in Iran, when he was dispatched, by President Carter to go to the Iranian Army generals and deliver his devastating secret message to them? Did you know? General Alexander Haig, commander of Nato forces, and general Huyser's boss then, resigned from his post in Nato in protest for what he considered an unjust interference of Carter administration in the Iranian internal affairs to undermine the Shah of Iran, in the deciding days when the movement in Iran was not labeled as "revolution" yet. I doubt if you have. Otherwise you would've given it a different treatment perhaps. Your previous works always suggest that you are a talented film maker, but in your own world, in Hollywood mentality. Please go back to what you are good at it. Forget about our once "home", which was brought down because of an international plot 34 years ago. Forget it. We, and you will be much better off. If by any chance you are interested in the truth, of what happened, and have a few hours time to spare, then watch a documentary called Devolution. I made that film dear Ben, not with mega budget of hundred millions such as yours, but with a personal few hundred thousand dollars budget. It is an independent true account of The disaster forced upon Iranians. us. I wish you had seen Devolution before that historical blunder at the beginning of Argo. I will be glad to send you a complimentary copy. ما از همان ابتدا تاکیدمان بر بی‌گناهی بوده و خود شما و دیگران می‌دانید که این همه قصه که از پس داستان پردازیهای امنیتی و اعترافات بدست آمده تحت آن همه شکنجه‌های سخت و فشارها و روزهای تلخ بازجویی و سلول انفرادی است... نامه زانیار ولقمان مرادی محکوم به اعدام از داخل زندان به شاکی پرونده امام جمعه مریوان امام جمعه شهر مریوان، چندی پیش ما لقمان و زانیار مرادی مطلع شدیدم که شما در سخنانی بر اهمیت گذشت و بخشش و آثار معنوی و اخلاقی آن بر فرد در جامعه اشاره کرده‌اید. هم از محکومین خواسته‌اید که برای بخشش و گذشت زمینه‌سازی بکنند و هم از شاکیان خواسته‌اید که بر اساس آنچه توصیه تاکید شده‌ی دینی و اخلاقی است و با بخشش و گذشت گامهای موثری برای جامعه بهتر و اخلاقی‌تر بر دارند. راستش ما در موقعیتی هستیم که این این سخنان را از هر کسی بشنویم مایل به شنیدن چند باره و بیانش برای شاکیانمان در پرونده‌ایی هستیم که متاسفانه هر روز بر سختی و تلخی تحمل کیفر بر بی‌گناهیمان افزوده می‌شود . در رهایی از این وضعیت بی تردید موانعی همچون عدم بخشش شاکی ، غفلت یا سختگیری و یا توصیه‌های دینی و اخلاقی چون عفو و گذشت از همان ابتدا دیده شده است و چه جای تعجب و برای ما تاسف است که آنکه توصیه می‌کند عمل نکرده است. ما از همان ابتدا تاکیدمان بر بی‌گناهی بوده و خود شما و دیگران می‌دانید که این همه قصه که از پس داستان پردازیهای امنیتی و اعترافات بدست آمده تحت آن همه شکنجه‌های سخت و فشارها و روزهای تلخ بازجویی و سلول انفرادی است چه حقیتی را پوشانید و چه دورغ و تسویه حسابهای شخصی و گروهی و کینه و نفرت استوار کرد اما با وجود این هیچگاه برای خود سخت نمی‌دانیم که اگر تصوری نادرست یا دستکاری شده به شیطنت دیگران تقصیر و گناهی را متوجه ما دانسته باشد علی‌الرغم تاکیدمان بر بی‌گناهی، عذر بخواهیم و برای بخشش و گذشت زمینه‌سازی بکنیم که بی‌تردید در پی این بخشش چه رفع خصومتها و کینه‌ها و چه ثبت دوستی و رفتار اخلافی خواهد بود. دوست داریم بگوییم که همیشه فکر می‌کنیم اگر اختلافی هست و مشکلی پیش آمده است یکی بی آنکه طرف دیگر بخواهد گامی را به حسن نیت بر می‌دارد تا امور سامان بگیرد. که در فرهنگ ما دور از حکمت و بی دلیل بخشش از بزرگان و عدم توجه به درخواست بخشش آن نگفته‌اند اما متاسفانه اینجا چه سنت غلطیست که حاکمان که برانداخته و بزرگان غفلت نموده‌اند. ماموستا مصطفی شیرزادی برای آنکه شائبه‌ایی و ذهن و گمان دیگر نرود و بر نیتمان تکرار می‌کنیم که انتظار داریم شما گامی برای حل این وضعیت و برای رهایی ما از این زندان و حکم اعدام بردارید و بر آنچه دعوت می‌کنید و آنچه بهتر میدانید عمل بکنید و جای چنین توصیه‌ایی به عمل شما مورد توجه دیگران قرار بگیرد. زانیار و لقمان مرادی – زندان رجایی شهر کرج
